In the First World War, Chinese states secretly transported 85,000 members of the 'Chinese Labour Corps' across Canada in locked CPR trains—the very railway their countrymen helped build decades earlier. They were then shipped to Europe where thousands died but until recently remained largely unacknowledged. Zhang Yan, a young Chinese history student who is from the same Shandong villages as the Chinese labourers, sets out to find out what really happened to the men of the Chinese Labour Corps.
